This workshop is appropriate for organizations revisiting their historical approach to investing with an eye to making changes based on current best practices.

It will also be beneficial for organizations taking their first steps towards formalizing their approach to managing their investment policies.

We’ll talk about the essential elements of an Investment Committee Terms of Reference, linking objectives of the Investment Policy Statement with spending policies, and touch on issues of responsible investing and mission-based investing.

This workshop is based on the customized sessions I do for individual boards, which have been well received.

I help not-for-profit investment committees articulate their purpose and implement investment strategies that are in line with the mission of the organization and enable them to meet their objectives.

I do this by working with investment committee members to help create a written Terms of Reference for the investment committee and written policies covering the rationale and purpose of investment decisions and spending policies.

I then research and propose the ideal investment portfolio that is in line with investing goals and anticipated spending.

IOrganizations have two basic models to choose between: (a) an annual fee for service based on a percentage of the funds invested, and (b) a fee paid for each transaction (purchase or sale).

Fees are fair and reasonable, and dependent on the type of investing activity. Organizations typically accumulate $25,000 before taking advantage of the services I offer.

I believe that my background ideally positions me for the work I do to help non-profits. As Past Chair of the Vancouver Park Board, Board Member of the Nature Trust of BC and Chair of their Fundraising Committee, Board Member of the Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, and past Executive Director of an environmental not-for-profit, I’ve gained an intimate understanding of the intricacies of board dynamics, fund raising challenges and the importance of good governance.
